Construction of the Barge

In a cooperative effort with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources,  Coastal Scuba helped spearhead the effort to improve the dive site by adding a 140 foot long barge to the site.

In a quote from Coastal Scuba's Cameron Sebastian:-

"The project turned out to be extremely labor intensive.  Over 25,000 pounds of steel were gathered to put on top of the barge, and each piece was carried by hand for the most part, and then welded piece by piece to create the triangle structures and large platforms that the barge has.   Over 3 to 4 hundred pounds of welding rods alone were used to put the site together.  Each piece came in stick by stick....."

"In addition to the steel A-frames, heavy machinery was used to lay concrete piping in place.  The idea was to create a reef with the diver in mind, providing plenty of access for the diver to enter overhead environments, but also with plenty of exits for a safe, enjoyable dive....."
